We were high tech when high tech wasn't cool.

The first real business computer for the home user was the Apple II Plus, released in the late 1970's. The first business program that Vela Technologies founder Steve Asson ever wrote was done in Applesoft on an Apple II Plus.

Since that time we have evolved with the industry, specializing in database driven business applications, and honed our skills along the way.

Lotus 123, DBase, Clipper, Microsoft Access, Visual Basic, SQL Server, and now Microsoft .NET. These are some of the core technologies and products we have specialized in over the years.

Today, the vast majority of our new development is done in the Microsoft .NET framework, using the latest versions of Microsoft Visual Studio and SQL Server.

For websites, we specialize in IIS hosted sites, using Adobe content creation products (GoLive, LiveMotion, Photoshop and Acrobat).

What's in a Name

We are often asked how we got the name Vela Technologies. Does it mean anything? Where did it come from?

Vela Technologies founder Steve Asson has worked for many companies (his own, and others) over the years. In 2000, when he founded Vela Technologies, Inc., Steve wanted to find a name and image that reflected the high-tech, pioneering nature of his work.

A longtime fan of aviation and space flight, Steve turned to the stars for his inspiration.

Vela is the name of a constellation in the Southern hemisphere. Translated, it means Sail or Sails, as in the sails of a ship. Vela is one of several constellations that form the original constellation Argo Navis, or Great Ship.

So, Vela Technologies has no deep meaning or grand historical significance. It is merely a name that we think is cool and invokes in us the spirit of adventure and scientific pioneering that are the cornerstones of space flight, and good software development.
